Alive School, Kampala, Uganda

Before Alive School was established in 2019, many children in the local area had not been in education because their families couldn’t afford the fees. Alive School allows 1/3 of its students to attend without paying any fees, and provides students with two meals everyday.

Started by a local pastor and Guild member within his church building, SPT donated £1700 of the £2400 that was needed to start the new school.

Alive School still faces many ongoing financial pressures: more children are asking to attend the school on full scholarships than they can afford to support; they don’t own the school site so on-going rental payments are due each month; and the daily cost of serving two meals for the students is high, but essential to continue as for many children these are their only meals of the day.

Current grant request:

SPT have received a grant request from Alive School requesting £5000 to buy 5x motorbikes. This will enable Pastor Deus, the school principal and founder, to start a Boda-Boda motorcycle taxi business. The profits of this business will fund the ongoing costs of the school, such as rent, teachers’ salaries, and meals for the children.

Boda-Bodas are one of the most popular ways to travel around Kampala as fares are cheap and the motorbikes can weave through the traffic. Without needing to pay large overheads for renting a premises, this is likely to be a profitable business for the school, providing them with a consistent income to support their work.
